Introduction
The German cockroach is very common and has a high reproductive rate. Because of these facts they are one of the most important structure-infesting cockroaches. Their offspring have a better chance of survival because the females carry the oothecae (egg capsules) until they are ready to hatch.
Characteristics
- Light brown coloration
- Bodies are ½ to 5/8 inches in length
- Two dark stripes running lengthwise on the pronotum
- Adults are fully winged but rarely fly
Where Found
Because they cannot tolerate cold temperatures they are mainly an indoor pest. They are commonly found in homes, apartments, condominiums and commercial food establishments. Because of their size they can be easily introduced into a structure. They can gain entry by concealing themselves in groceries or luggage or by migrating from other infested structures. Usually seek dark shelters near moisture and food, such as kitchens and bathrooms. When populations become large and food scarce they can appear in bedrooms and other less likely places.
Management: What can you do for them?
Controlling German Cockroaches begins with sanitation. Removal of food, water and harborage in the infested area allows for a more successful treatment. Control options for German cockroaches are extensive, ranging from liquid sprays, gel baits, dusts, and bait stations, and each individual situation will determine which method is appropriate. Gel baits should be applied in small pea sized applications into areas where the roaches are living. Bait stations should be used in situations where tamper resistant stations are needed.
Be sure to follow label instructions when using any pesticide and apply it only as directed. Exterior application of pesticides is unneeded as these are interior infesting cockroaches. Thorough treatment and follow up visits are usually necessary in heavily infested situations. Preventing infestations is possible by inspecting boxes and bags as they are brought into a structure and not allowing materials in with signs of infestation.
